On January 1, 2004, the 8th edition of the International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification) entered into force.
The Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) applies this new edition of the Locarno Classification as from January 1, 2004 for all the applications for Registered Community Designs (RCD) filed on or after that date. Pending RCD applications or already Registered Community Designs having a filing date prior to January 1, 2004 will not be reclassified and there will be no option for their reclassification available to the RCD applicant or proprietor.
The major changes introduced are as follows:
* Introduction of two separate subclasses for seats (subclass 6-01) and for beds (subclass 6-02) and reclassification of the products of the previous common subclass 6-01.
* Introduction of one new subclass for Screen displays and icons (subclass 14-4).
* Reclassification of certain products, introduction of new products and amendments in the wording of one subclass title and of some products.
