Kuwaiti Information Minister Mohammad Abulhasan stated that the government will soon submit a bill to Parliament to amend some articles of the Copyright Law in order to increase fines on infringers from KD 500 to KD 1000 and double prison terms to two years, Kuwait Times reported.
“The amendments have already been approved by the Cabinet, and Parliament is expected to pass them when it reconvenes in October 2004,” Abulhasan added.
He recommended establishing independent authority to follow up the implementation of Intellectual Property laws in Kuwait.
On the other hand, head of the Kuwaiti Society for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, Sheikh Salman Dawoud Al-Sabah, expressed his satisfaction with the efforts exerted to increase financial fines and double the jail period for violators of copyright law.
