“The Qatari law on arbitration has yet to be amended,” according to Dr. Robert Briner, Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
Speaking at a conference in Doha on international commercial arbitration, Dr. Briner said Qatar had ratified, a few years ago, a New York Convention of 1958 on the recognition in enforcement of foreign arbitrage award, but “much has to be done,” The Peninsula reported.
“The concerned authorities in Qatar should have a look at it in the near future and try to bring it up-to-date and modernize it,” he commented.
Dr. Briner pointed out that arbitration is part of business and development and that with the economic and construction boom in the country, problems are bound to arise and disputes would need to be settled.
