Bahrain Formalizes Accession to Locarno Agreement, Reinforcing International Alignment on Industrial Design Classification

04-Jun-2026

MANAMA - The Kingdom of Bahrain has enacted Law No. (21) of 2026 to ratify its accession to the Locarno Agreement, the long-standing international treaty that provides a uniform classification system for industrial designs. The move formalizes Bahrain’s continued alignment with global intellectual property standards and supports clarity and consistency for design registration and administration.

The Locarno Agreement, originally signed on October 8, 1968 and amended on September 28, 1979, creates a standardized framework of classes and subclasses that simplifies the identification, search, and management of industrial design rights across member countries. Bahrain’s formal accession brings the country into the roster of states that officially recognize and apply this internationally accepted classification, reinforcing predictability for designers, attorneys, and businesses operating domestically and across borders.
