Saudi Arabia Joins the Hague System, Expanding Global Design Rights

09-Feb-2025

GENEVA – The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) announced that Saudi Arabia has officially joined the Hague System, bringing the total number of countries in the international design system to 99. Saudi Arabia’s membership signifies a strong commitment to innovation and enhances the Hague System's role as a global standard for securing design rights.

The Government of Saudi Arabia deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement, becoming the 76th Contracting Party to the Geneva Act and the 82nd member of the Hague Union. This significant step will allow designers in Saudi Arabia to protect their designs more effectively and encourage creativity across the region. The Geneva Act will enter into force in Saudi Arabia on April 7, 2025.

The Hague System provides an efficient and cost-effective way for creators to obtain design protection in multiple countries through a single application. With Saudi Arabia’s involvement, the system becomes more accessible to designers in the Middle East, fostering innovation and collaboration. The addition of Saudi Arabia is expected to encourage regional businesses to engage more actively in international markets.
