GENEVA - The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presented his compliments and notified the deposit by the Government of the United Arab Emirates, on September 28, 2021, of its instrument of accession to the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks, adopted in Madrid on June 27, 1989 ("Madrid Protocol (1989)").

According to the WIPO, the Madrid Protocol will enter into force, with respect to the United Arab of Emirates, on December 28, 2021. Both the Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol constitute the Madrid System of International Registration of Marks.

Starting December 28, 2021, local brand owners in the United Arab Emirates will be able to protect their trademarks in the 124 territories of the System’s other 108 members by simply filing one application with a single office, in one language, with one set of fees in one currency (Swiss francs). For those interested in bringing their brands into the UAE market, they can also protect their trademarks through the Madrid System.
