An Effective Trademark Law Essential for National Interest

01-May-2003

On the 24th of March 2003, the Business Software Alliance (BSA) held a meeting to discuss the protection provided by the Egyptian IP Law against the infringements by Trademark pirates and cybersquatters.

Mr. Mohammad Abdel-Aal from the Ministry of Supplies indicated that Egypt has always led a pioneering role beginning with the first Trademark Law in 1939, through being a signatory to the 1951 Paris Convention, and reaching the signing of the TRIPS Agreement in the 1995.

Mr. Abdel-Aal indicated further that the law, which is comprehensive and stringent, is not only meant to protect IP rights. In the 21st century, the age of Globalization, IP Laws guarantees a steady and even growing flow of investments that Egypt as all developing countries needs to generate both capital and employment.

All attendees clearly agreed that protecting Trademarks and other IP rights is essential for a healthy economy, and therefore the fight against pirates and cybersquatters is one that needs to be won for the benefit of the national interest.
