GENEVA - The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran deposited on December 9, 2005, its instrument of accession to the Lisbon Agreement for the Protection of Appellations of Origin and their International Registration of October 31, 1958.
According to a press release by the Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the said agreement will enter into force with respect to Iran on March 9, 2006.
The aim of the Lisbon Agreement is to provide protection for appellations of origin, that is, the “geographical name of a country, region, or locality, which serves to designate a product originating therein, the quality and characteristics of which are due exclusively or essentially to the geographic environment, including natural and human factors.”
