AGIP India Participates in a Conference on Counterfeit Goods

NEW DELHI - Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) India Office participated in a conference entitled "Counterfeit, Spurious and Contraband Goods: Preventive and Remedial Issues" in New Delhi on October 26, 2005.

Organized by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), the event brought together legal experts, representatives of the industrial sector, as well as enforcement officials with the aim of highlighting the issue of counterfeit products, which have become a serious problem to the world.

"The conference tackled counterfeiting and the measures that should be adopted to control this menace," said Mr. Sandip Sharan, AGIP India Office Marketing Officer who attended the conference.

During the course of the conference, ASSOCHAM recommended fundamental legislative, judicial, administrative and systemic changes related to the prevention and elimination of the problem.

These suggestions contributed to the identification of the problems faced by consumers and the preventive and remedial measures for controlling the menace posed by the counterfeit, fake, spurious and contraband products.

Shri Kirit S. Javali from Jafa and Javali Advocates stressed on the importance of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in fighting this problem in the world and especially in India which is suffering from this "menace" in various industries.

The conference was inaugurated by Secretary Shri Labanyendu Mansingh, Department of Consumer Affairs and Public Distributions, Government of India.
