AGIP China Participates in the AsiaLaw China Summit

BEIJING - Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Liaison office in China participated in the Second Annual AsiaLaw China Summit held on September 22, 2005, at Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai.

According to Ms. Arail Xu from AGIP China, prospects of investment in China, managing Chinese companies’ intellectual property portfolio in addition to other key business issues were tackled in the summit.

Kenneth Tung, a regional legal counsel from Honeywell, emphasized in his opening speech on the importance of intellectual property (IP) protection for each company seeking investment in China.

"Companies should think carefully about the following questions: How to manage the company IP portfolio? What to bring to China? And How?," he said.

Under the theme "Leveraging & Optimizing Your Human Resources in China," Jong Wang and Julia Zhao from Lee and Li discussed the two major issues in the protection of innovation outputs which are IP enforcement and invention ownership.

Under the theme "Building an Effective IP Strategy," Blaine Turnacliff from Leman Lee & Xu stressed on launching a series of campaigns to raise public awareness about IP laws and regulations, in addition to developing an advanced IP system through adopting stiff penalties against IP infringements.

The summit tackled other topics including foreign direct investment in China, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and joint ventures, dispute resolution in China (litigation and arbitration), as well as taxation.
