AMMAN - Under the Patronage of the Jordanian Minister of Information and Communications Technology, HE Ms. Nadia Al-Saeed, the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD) Board and Members Meetings was held at the Amman Marriott Hotel, October 2-3, 2005.
Organized by Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAGO) and the National Information Technology Center (NITC), the event brought together country-code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) managers from across the Asia Pacific Region to discuss various issues related to Internet and domain names.
In her opening speech, Ms. Al-Saeed stated how the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector is becoming an essential part in Jordanians’ everyday life, stressing the fact that Jordan is implementing effective mechanisms to upgrade this sector.
Meanwhile, TAGO Executive Director Mr. Mustafa Nasereddin said, "Knowledge is the catalyst for development and prosperity. TAGO is proud of the fact that the first meeting of the APTLD is being held here."
Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Regional Office Executive Director, Mr. Charles Sha’ban, pointed out the importance of the meeting.
"The event created a platform for interaction and discussions about the development of public policy issues as well as ccTLDs best practices," he said.
"We shared expertise with domain name registries from the Asia Pacific region and had the opportunity to strengthen our relations with several ccTLD managers who attended the meeting," he added.
During the course of meeting, key topics were discussed including: Domain Name System (DNS) Security, Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs), Role of Internet Assigned Names Authority (IANA), Role of Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), and updates on the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG).
APTLD is the association for ccTLD registries in the Asia Pacific region, which extends to the borders of Europe in the West. Currently, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates are the only Arab members in the APTLD.
