Dubai - "Emirates Telecommunications Company (Etisalat) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking the necessary preparations to launch domain names in Arabic," according to Ahmed Abdulkarim Julfar, General Manager of e-Company, Etisalat’s one-stop e-powerhouse that provides Internet services and ICT solutions.
In his statement to the Dubai-based Al-Bayan Newspaper, Julfar pointed out that Etisalat has launched, in cooperation with the United Arab Emirates Network Information Center (UAEnic) and several Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the region, a pilot project called the "Arabic Domain Trial," in order to introduce domain names in Arabic.
The project aims to accumulate knowledge and experience with the Arabic domain names, share it with other Arab countries, build local awareness about Arabic domain names, and promote multilingual issues and standards on the Internet.
"Etisalat has signed several agreements with ISPs in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria to accelerate the process of domain name Arabization," Julfar added.
