AMMAN - Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), through its Watch Service Department at the Regional Office, is introducing a new service for the first time in Jordan and the Arab world that will tighten the protection of the intellectual property rights in the region. This marks the beginning of cooperation between the public sector, represented by the Customs Department, and the private sector represented by AGIP.
The new service allows for trademarks to be recorded with the Customs Department as the first frontier in the fight against counterfeiting and infringement problems. Once a trademark is recorded with the Customs Department, the entrance of infringing products will be closely controlled and the owners will be immediately notified of any such incidents.
As part of the cooperation agreement signed between AGIP and the Jordanian Customs Department, all trademarks registered by AGIP with the Jordanian Trademark Office, will be part of the automatic recordation system at the Customs Department.
The Watch Service Department at AGIP has been rapidly expanding during the past few years and has introduced new services along the way, in order to meet the needs and requirements of our clients and trademark owners all over the world. Markets and official gazettes are constantly searched for infringement signs as part of the Watch Service Department’s activities.
The cooperation agreement signed between AGIP and the Jordanian Customs Department has proved to be a success. Negotiations are underway with all customs departments all over the Arab world to sign similar cooperation agreements, which will result in an enormous improvement in the intellectual property protection in the area.
On each side, the parties were represented by Mr. Alaa Al-Batayneh, the General Director of the Customs Department, and Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, the Chairman of AGIP.
