Qatar Introduces Law to Curb Cyber Crimes

02-May-2005

"Qatar is to introduce a comprehensive cyber law to prevent Internet-related crimes and regulate e-commerce," said Mr. Ahmad Hamed Al Mohanadi, director of Qatar’s e-Government.

"The cyber law, which is the first in the country to deal with cyber crimes, could be issued by June 2005. The Cabinet is revising its provisions before approval," he added.

The law is essential for the country that has developed an e-Government portal through which residents can apply for online services and conduct electronic transactions, the Gulf News reported.

Several Qatari ministries have already joined the e-Government project and are currently providing their services through the net, including issuing entry visas and health cards, renewing driving licenses, or paying traffic fines.
Mr. Al Mohanadi said that, due to the increase in the number of e-Government services and applicants, there is a higher risk of cyber crimes being committed.

"The e-Government officials have already dealt with some violations, which were promptly detected and tackled, but now a tailored legislation is needed, as we are in need of a comprehensive and effective law to define crimes and punishments," he pointed out.
