Decree No. 1.05.21 was issued in the Kingdom of Morocco on February 16, 2005, approving the Kingdom’s accession to the International Convention for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).The decree was published in the Official Gazette No. 5296, dated March 3, 2005.
The purpose of the UPOV Convention is to encourage the development of new varieties of plants by granting breeders an intellectual property right on the basis of a set of clearly defined principles.
UPOV is an inter-governmental organization based in Geneva, and cooperates in administrative matters with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).The acronym UPOV is derived from the French name of the organization, Union internationale pour la protection des obtentions végétales.
