AGIP to Establish Geographical Indications Database in Yemen

Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) was assigned by the Yemeni Ministry of Industry and Commerce (YMIC) to establish a database of all geographical indications in Yemen, which will be the first achievement of its kind in the Arab region.

AGIP will also provide the concerned authorities in Yemen with technical and legal assistance to draft a modernized law for geographical indications in the country.

This assignment came during the visit of AGIP Chairman, Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, to Sana’a, April 15-18, two days following the conclusion of the First Geographical Indications Symposium in the Arab region, which was held in Abu Dhabi from April 12-13.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh paid a visit to the General Directorate for Intellectual Property Protection (GDIPP) at the Ministry, where he was provided with an overview on the Directorate’s different sections and work progress in general.

The GDIPP revealed the latest figures concerning trademark, patent, and industrial design registrations.

By April 2005, there had been a total of 31,710 trademark applications in both Aden, starting in 1942, and Sana’a, starting in 1976. The number of the registered trademarks, however, reached 25,285.

Meanwhile, the number of patent applications which have been registered in both Aden, starting in 1944, and Sana’a, starting in May 1998, totaled 851 by December 31, 2004.

Concerning industrial designs in Sana’a, starting from 1998 up to April 20, 2005, there were 319 design applications and 171 design registrations.
