Turkey Ratifies Geneva Act of Hague Agreement and TLT

27-Oct-2004

The Government of the Republic of Turkey ratified October 1, 2004, the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs, adopted in Geneva July 2, 1999 (the "Geneva Act").

The Hague Agreement is a multilateral treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It allows nationals and residents of, or companies established in, a State party to the Agreement, to obtain industrial design protection in a number of countries through a simple and inexpensive procedure: a single "international" deposit, in one language (English or French), upon payment of a single set of fees, in one currency, and filed with one office (either directly with the International Bureau of WIPO or, under certain circumstances, through the national Office of a contracting State).

There are three separate Acts of the Hague Agreement, namely the London Act (1934), the Hague Act (1960) and the Geneva Act (1999).

On the other hand, the Turkish government also ratified, October 1, 2004, the Trademark Law Treaty (TLT), adopted in Geneva October 27, 1994.

Both the Geneva Act and the TLT will enter into force with respect to Turkey, January 1, 2005.
