‘IP Opportunities for Development’ Conference in Egypt

The Egyptian Intellectual Property Studies Center (EIPSC), in cooperation with the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation organized a conference entitled “Intellectual Property Opportunities for Development”, which was held at the Nile Hilton Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, October 12-13, 2004.

Egyptian and German experts in the IP field discussed the development of Small and Medium- Sized Enterprises (SMEs) by using Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) and highlighted the role of trademarks and patents in the development of SMEs.

Another session was allocated to discuss protection of literary and artistic works, folklore protection and traditional knowledge, in addition to protection of computer software & databases and domain names.

The effect of Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS) on the Egyptian economy especially on medicine manufacturing was also tackled in the conference.
