New National Production Protection Law Issued in Jordan

A new law called “The Protection of National Production Law No. 21 for the year 2004” has been issued March 30, 2004, and published in the Official Gazette June 1, 2004 in Jordan.

The new law aims to protect the national production without prejudice to the international agreements Jordan has signed especially World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement.

The new law applies to industrial and agricultural products imported to Jordan from a member country in the WTO. Moreover, the Council of Ministries may apply any of the provisions of this law on imported products from non-member country in the WTO, or impose duty on products from such countries, or take any other procedures, that it deems necessary for the protection of the national production.

This new law provides for measures to cope with damaging practices and applications. Damaging practices are defined as the increase in introducing a certain product imported to Jordan or its import at dumping or subsidized prices.
Moreover, this law provides for realizing an investigation regarding damaging practices, the expeditious measures and final results, which may be taken as a result thereof, in addition to protection measures, which the Minister of Industry and Trade may decide.
