ICANN Meetings Concluded in Kuala Lumpur

01-Aug-2004

The second round of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) meetings was held July 19 - 23, 2004 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, hosted by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

ICANN Meetings included Generic Name Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council Meeting, Workshop on the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), Workshop on Internationalized Domain Names, and ICANN Board of Directors Meeting.

Civil society organizations, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), regional domain name registers, commercial and non-commercial organizations attended the meetings.

During the ICANN Board of Directors Meeting, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) member states requested the following two decisions to be transmitted to ICANN [(1) concerning the names and acronyms of international intergovernmental organizations, and (2) concerning the names of countries].
A working group including participants in the GNSO, the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC), and the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) as well as ICANN Board members, will be formed for the purpose of analyzing the practical and technical aspects of implementing the WIPO recommendations, and notably the implications for the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP).
Another issue discussed was the Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). ICANN Board instructed to establish an Advisory Committee on IDN, to provide the Board and ICANN community with advice on issues that relate to IDN policies, in particular, issues that impact the implementation of IDN especially at the top level.

Other topics discussed were the 2004-2005 budget proposal, which the ICANN Board approved, official recognition of AfriNIC as the African regional Internet address registry, and the inaugural meeting of the country code Name Supporting Organization Council (ccNSO).

It is noteworthy that the first round of ICANN meetings in 2004 was held March 2 - 6, in Rome, Italy. The next ICANN Annual Meeting will be held in Cape Town, South Africa, December 5, 2004.
