Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) took part in the Asian-Pacific Region Internet Conference of Technology (APRICOT), which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia between 18-27 of February 2004.
APRICOT included seminars, workshops, tutorials, conference sessions, and other forums, which aim at spreading and sharing the knowledge required to operate the Internet within the Asia Pacific region.
Mr. Bilal Kisswani, the Internet Officer of the Regional Office of Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), participated in several workshops. One of these was the “ISP Security Workshop (February 18-22)”.
Professional instructors from CISCO systems and Nepal-ISP engineers provided the attendants with a comprehensive description on how to secure routers, and what techniques should be implemented on routers to prevent network from being hacked or compromised.
Nepal-ISP engineers displayed their theory of how to protect a network and the application needed to protect it from attackers.
Another workshop Mr. Kisswani took part in was “Native Name Social Impact on Internet Society (February 23)”. Speakers from different countries expressed the impact of native names on Internet society after the implementation of native names in their countries.
Presentations in this regard were submitted by experts from Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand. Speakers gave a brief presentation on the native names experience in their countries and its impact on Internet user.
The Multilingual Internet Names Consortium (MINC) held a conference entitled (MINC IDN 2004 Conference at APRICOT 2004) on February 25. It highlighted several Internet-related issued and specifically the Internet governance. Mr. Kisswani presented a paper as MINC representative on behalf of Mr. Khaled Fattal (MINC CEO & Chairman) concerning Arabic domain names.
“Several issues have been tackled in my presentation such as the latest development of MINC-Arabic Workgroup and the 1st RFC published by MINC,” said Mr. Kisswani.
“Also, statistics of Internet users in the Arab world and how the Arabic domain names will help increase the number of Internet users and the difficulties that the Workgroup is facing in the development of the Arabic Domain names,” he added.
Mr. Kisswani also participated in a tutorial entitled (Network Security: the Principles of threats, attacks and Intrusion on February 24.
By and large, the workshops tackled pure technical issues relating to the ISP security through which participants were provided with an introduction to network security, system security and dealing with DOS attacks.
Other workshops entitled; Routing Workshop, BGP Multihoming Workshop, Network Management Workshop and IPv6 Routing Workshop provided the participants with advanced practice and tips on how to use and manage Internet system.
It is worth noting that APRICOT 2005 will be held from the 16th to 25th of February 2005 in Kyoto, Japan.
