ICANN Launches Trademark Clearinghouse
12-Mar-2013 MARINA DEL REY, CA - In the context of enhancing the protection of Intellectual Property on the Internet and protecting the trademark holders’ rights, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has worked with Intellectual Property experts and developed a new mechanism under the name of Trademark Clearinghouse. This new mechanism will allow trademark holders to protect their rights during the registration of domain names in new generic top level domains (gTLDs) including geographical domains, community domains, brand names and generic/descriptive domains.
As a global database of verified data on trademarks, the Trademark Clearinghouse will open on March 26, 2013 to any holder of eligible trademarks whether a private individual or company. It is established to increase protections and reduce costs for rights owners who need to protect their trademarks.
Through the Trademark Clearinghouse, the right holder will be acknowledged with conflicting domain names in any new gTLD during a period of 60 days after the initial launch of the extension.
As the Trademark Clearinghouse will act as a notification service, it will provide a level of protection against trademark infringements, but it will not fully protect against individuals registering domains containing trademarked names.
Aiming to guarantee local and foreign clients across many industries, from small businesses to major national and international corporations the best protection of their trademarks, Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) is ready to provide Trademark Clearinghouse service to its clients in various countries.
