The Information Technology Committee, affiliate to the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) Secretariat has recently finalized a pilot project to implement a test bed for Arabic Domain Names in the GCC countries, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported.

Head of the Saudi Network Information Center at the Internet Services Unit - King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST), and member of the Committee, Dr. Abdulaziz Azzouman pointed out “the project aims at increasing the number of Internet users in the Arab world, mainly those who face difficulties using the English language.”
Azzouman added that the Domain Names Team affiliate to the Committee has prepared a plan for the project and an organizational restructure of the main servers for Arabic Domain Names (ccTLD DNS Servers & Arabic Root).

“The servers in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have been completely prepared, and for experimental purposes the ccTLD DNS for the three countries have been registered,” he added. Azzouman noted that Internet users can log in to these domains by using Netscape 7.1, Mozilla 1.4 and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
