Syria Joins the Madrid Agreement & Protocol

01-Apr-2004

His Excellency Syrian President Bashar Al- Assad issued Decree No. 92, March 26, 2004, stipulating that the Syrian Arab Republic will join the 1891 Madrid Agreement, concerning the International Registration of Marks and the 1989 Madrid Protocol.

Meanwhile, official sources at the Patent Office (PT) told Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property that the accession instrument had not been deposited yet, and that the Syrian Foreign Ministry will ensure the deposit of the said instrument.

Accordingly, the Madrid Agreement & Protocol will come into force after three months from the depositing date.

By this accession, an applicant will be able to designate Syria on an application to register an international trademark, three months after depositing the accession instrument.

However, head of the PT is still uncertain as to the possibility of applying for territorial extension of an existing international trademark to cover Syria.
