AGIP Participates in IP Activities in China

Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) has participated in the Second Annual Conference on Commercialization of Intellectual Property, April 15-16, 2004 in Swissotel, Beijing, China. The Resident in-charge of AGIP China Liaison Office, Ms. Ridab Abutaleb, attended the aforesaid Conference.

The Conference, organized by JF Pearson and sponsored by American Appraisal China Limited, included several sessions tackling IP-related issues. The main focus was on Chinese IP laws and the role of the judicial system in IPR enforcement in China.

The sessions dealt with the issue of how to commercialize intellectual property, technology transfer and the management of intellectual capital.

On the other hand, Ms. Abutaleb took part in two events this April. The first event is the High Level Workshop on IPR and Economic Development, held April 20-21, 2004.

The Workshop was co-organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Development Research Center (DRC) of the State Council, and the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), of the People’s Republic of China.

The Workshop aimed at improving the understanding by Chinese policy makers and other stakeholders, of the increasing importance of IPR policies, in promoting technological innovation and social and economic growth.

Moreover, it sought to learn from the experience of OECD and other countries, and to benefit from the expertise of international organizations and firms in improving IPR policy and IPR management, in an open and increasingly globalized economy.

The second event was the High-Level Seminar on IPRs in Public Research Institutions, which was held April 22-23, 2004. It was co-organized by OECD and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), of the People’s Republic of China.

The Seminar aimed at providing Chinese officials and representatives of public research institutions, with state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise on designing and implementing IP policies in public research institutions, in addition to drawing extensively on experience of OECD member countries and selected non-member countries.

OECD experts, senior officials, policy makers from China, representatives from WIPO and the WTO, along with public research organizations, participated in the Workshop and Seminar.
