Syrian President Bashar Al- Assad issued Decree No. 92 dated March 25, 2004 stipulating that the Syrian Arab Republic will join the 1891 Madrid Agreement, concerning the International Registration of Marks and the 1989 Madrid Protocol. The aforesaid Decree was published in the Official Gazette No. 16 dated April 21, 2004.
On May 5, 2004, the Syrian Government deposited, with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), its instrument of accession to both the Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol. The Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol will enter into force with respect to Syria August 5, 2004.
Accession to the Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol by Syria brings the number of Contracting Parties of the Madrid System to 76.
