AGIP Turkey Attends International Conference on “Patent Protection in an International Environment”

ANKARA - An international conference of “Patent Protection in an International Environment” was held on March 24-25, 2011 within the framework of the European Union Twinning Project conducted by Turkish Patent Institute and German International Judicial Cooperation Association.

Nihat Ergün, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ankara Ambassadors of Germany and Japan as well as the Primary Parliamentary Secretary of the Ankara Ambassador of Italy participated in the opening ceremony of the conference. The conference which was organized with the cooperation and contributions of European Patent Office, OHIM, Germany Federal Patent Court, Germany Patent and Trademark Office, Italian Trademark and Patent Office, Italian Intellectual Property Istanbul Office, Japan Patent Office and Japan Foreign Trade Organization witnessed the participation of Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Turkey Office namely; Ms. Ozlem Ozgur Arslan (Executive Director of Turkey Office), Ms. Sibel Kaya (TM Attorney), Mrs. Ebru Gumusbas (Patent & TM Attorney) and Mrs. Hatice Toksoy (Patent & TM Attorney).

In the first day of the conference, patent protection in Turkey within the framework of international protection was inclusively discussed, and the scope of the regional protection provided under a European Patent was presented by the experts from the European Patent Office. In addition, the patent protection granted under the Patent Cooperation Treaty which provides protection in an international platform was presented by the experts from World Intellectual Property Organization.

Ms. Ozlem Ozgur Arslan underlined that “Since January 1, 1996, Turkey is a party to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) of 1970. Consequently, Turkey may be designated in international applications filed under the PCT. “

A PCT application in the National Phase can be filed in Turkey upon completion of the required documents. PCT applications entering into national phase are not subject to search procedure since International Search Reports are readily accepted by the T.P.I.

A granted European Patent can be validated in Turkey with a single application, upon translation of the specification into Turkish and submission of the other requirements.
