A new copyright and neighboring rights law was recently issued in the UAE. The first of eight chapters comprising this new law defines the range of protection, while the second and third are designated to copyrights and the range of neighboring rights protection, respectively.
The period of protection, licensing, use of work, collective management of copyrights and neighboring rights, precautionary measures and penalties, are all discussed extensively in the rest of the chapters.
Books, booklets, articles and other written materials, computer software and applications, database, are all included in protection under this law. Protection also includes lectures, speeches, sermons, acting works, burlettas, pantomime, audio-visual works, architectural works, drawings, lithographs, graffiti, xylographs and any similar works in the fields of fine arts and plastic arts as well as photographic works.
Protection also includes explanatory depictions, geographical maps, diagrams, and architectural, topographic and geographic three-dimensional works. Moreover, derivative works, creative titles of works, and creative ideas written for broadcasting are protected.
