WIPO Academy Authorities Visited Turkish Patent Institute

ANKARA - Mr. Vladimir YOSSIFOV and Ms. Isabella PIMENTEL, representatives from WIPO Academy within the body of World Intellectual Property Organization visited Turkish Patent Institute on December 13-14, 2010 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) within the scope of the studies intended to establish “INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ACADEMY” which is one of the joint projects conducted with WIPO. The meeting witnessed the participation of Abdurrahman CELIK, Minister of Culture and Tourism and General Director of Copyrights.

Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN, Director of the Institute made a speech at the beginning of the meeting and emphasized the progresses made in the field of industrial property in the recent years. He also underlined the importance of establishing a national academy primarily and a regional academy thereafter when the geographical location of Turkey is considered.

The education activities started by World Intellectual Property Organization in 1998 continue with 3 basic programs. These are education, professional development and academic institution programs. Twenty national and three regional academy projects had been completed before WIPO by this time. Turkey has been included in the evaluations which have been conducted with 5 countries within the scope of the WIPO Development Agenda thanks to this study.

The aim of the meeting was to issue a pre-assessment report by WIPO Academy Authorities within the scope of the studies for establishing an Intellectual Property Academy in Turkey, and favorable results were obtained for Turkey.
