World Arbitration Forum for IP Inaugurated in Jordan

DEAD SEA, JORDAN - The World Arbitration Forum for Intellectual Property, organized by the Arbitration Center of the Arab Federation for Protection of Intellectual Property (ACIP), was inaugurated today by HRH Prince Asem Bin Nayef at the Mövenpick Resort Dead Sea with the participation of regional and international experts and officials.

The two-day Forum aims at highlighting the pivotal and strategic role of Jordan in the Arab region, and to emphasis on the distinguished Jordanian role in the legislature of intellectual property and arbitration.

It also seeks to raise public awareness of the significant challenges facing the world to catch up with the continuous technological development, and massive profound transformations in all the different spheres of social and economic life, especially in the field of electronic transactions.

To raise the public awareness of arbitration and mediation as important tool contributing in resolving disputes arising in the intellectual property areas and other disputes on the basis of the rules were emanated from the WTO agreements.

In his official statement regarding the objectives for holding this event, Dr. Mohammad Halaiqah, chairman of the Steering Committee on the official website of the Forum stated: “As disputes arising from intellectual property requires quick actions that cope up with the speed of transmission and circulation of information, arbitration in addition to mediation occupied a distinguished position as means to resolve conflicts. All of that formed a new culture that should be dealt with and published according to scientific and practical patterns. This was the reason for holding the World Arbitration Forum for Intellectual Property which aims at exchanging international knowledge and expertise and raising the level of workers and superiors in this area.”

The different sessions of the Forum will tackle Protection of Intellectual Property Contracts and Investments under the Rules of the ICSID Convention, of the New York Convention, of the WIPO Organization and of the World Trade Organization, and of the ICC rules; the Arbitrability of Intellectual Property Disputes: a Comparative View (Uncitral Rules, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, USA, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia); The experience of international arbitration centers in optimizing the Resolution of IP Disputes under Various Arbitration rules (WIPO , ICC, UNCITRAL, DIS , SCC, KCAB); Arbitration and Internet; arbitrating Specific Contracts Related to IP; intellectual Property and Alternative Disputes Resolutions: Italian Law, Jordanian Law, , Chinese Law, Egyptian Law in addition to other IP-related topics.

The Arbitration Center of the Arab Federation for Protection of Intellectual Property (ACIP) was established by a resolution of the Council of Arab Economic Unity, as the first Arab international body affiliated to the Arab Federation for the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights. It has been publicized during the Second Arab Customs Meeting, which was held in Aqaba/Jordan on the 16th of June 2009. ACIP has the same privileges and immunities enjoyed by the Council of Arab Economic Unity in accordance with the Statute of the Federation.
