Libya Issues First Trademark Registration Certificate after 30 Years Stop

TRIPOLI - Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) would like to notify its clients that the Libyan Corporate and Commercial Registrations Directorate, affiliate to the General People's Committee for Industry, Economy and Commerce in Libya, issued on May 25, 2010 the first registration certificate for a trademark in the country after a 30- year block off.

The Libyan Trademark Office has resumed its work in 2002 and started to receive trademark registration applications since then. The number of these applications went up to reach 20442.

The Office didn’t announce yet when it will officially start the issuance of Registration Certificates to owners of trademarks. However, according to well-informed source, the issuance will be announced in the near future.

Registered trademarks in Libya are legally protected in conformity with the enforced legislations and in accordance with the international law and conventions related to Intellectual Property Rights protection.
