Internet Domain Name Turns 25

AMMAN - The Internet as we know it today turns 25 with an amazing number of 85 million sites which are active and colorful as this figure keeps significantly growing every day.
"We all remember the late 1990s when it all began to take shape and changed our life as we know it," Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Executive Director Charles Shaban told AG-IP-news Agency.
"The Internet seems to be going on the right track although we expect vital changes to take shape soon in this virtual world we live in," he added.

According to records, the first company to add dotcom to its name was Symbolics in 1985.
"The Internet or the dotcom revolution took its time to reach the Arab world in full due to many reasons such as the availability of personal computers, the cost and understanding of the whole concept back then," Shaban said.

"Now almost everyone can afford to have computer with an Internet line and you can take the Internet with you anywhere so the impact was positive and took such a short time when all elements were available," he added.

According to Shaban, there are 100,000 dotcom sites registered daily.
"Of course when thousands of dotcoms do register daily many more are packing and leaving the virtual world," he said.

"People's habits contributed positively to the number of dotcoms on the Internet as people now shop through the Internet, meet people, do business and communicate through the Internet so there was a need to have more ideas for websites," he added.
Shaban believes that the mobile phones technology started a huge breakthrough in the way we access the Internet.

"Every day we hear of a new mobile phone hitting the market that has excellent wireless features to be online all the time or through fees so it is not about having a computer anymore," he said.
In 1997, the millionth dotcom domain was registered.
