Shaban Discusses Management of gTLD in the IGF Arab Summer School for Internet
30-Jun-2009 CAIRO - The Arab Summer School for Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was held in Cairo June 28, 2009 till July 1, 2009 at the Sheraton Dreamland Hotel & Conference Center. The School was organized as part of the Egyptian preparations for the IGF fourth meeting scheduled to be held in November 2009 in Sharm el Sheikh.
Mr. Charles Shaban, Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) executive director participated in the event where he jointly delivered a presentation Mr. Bashar Al-Abdul Hadi, KuwaitNET Internet Services entitled “The Management of gTLD: Today and Tomorrow”.
“The Summer School for Internet Governance is considered a pioneering idea, held periodically in several Western capitals, for raising the awareness of Internet Affairs; this year, however, Cairo hosts this venue as the first Arab and African capital,” Mr. Shaban said.
“Organizing the Summer School on Internet Governance for the Arab region is considered a crucial milestone in the process of capacity building for the fourth IGF preparations,” he added.
During the Arab Summer School, participants were introduced to a number of Internet issues such as the history of Internet governance, domain management, multilingualism, policies and legislations in addition to Internet protocols.
In addition to AGIP, speaking at the event were representatives from IGF, the Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the Egyptian National Telecom Regulatory Authority, Georgetown University Washington, Nile University and the Kuwait Information Technology Society (KITS).
The Summer School was held under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in collaboration with the National Telecom Regulatory Authority and the Nile University, partnering with the Arab World Internet Institute.
The first summer school on Internet Governance took place in Meissen - Germany in 2007. The European Summer School on Internet Governance helps interested students and academics as well as individuals working in the private sector or public sector, to better understand the global Internet Governance controversy and to get a comprehensive and structured knowledge on the various aspects of Internet Governance.
