Registration of Service Marks Now Possible in Dominica
28-Feb-2008
ROSEAU, DOMINICA - The Trademark Registrar has recently allowed the registration of service marks in Dominica, provided that such applications are based on a corresponding UK registration which is registered in the service classes, according to official sources.
Dominica operates a dual system of trademark registration. The Trademarks Ordinance provides for local trademark applications, while the UK Trademarks Ordinance provides for applications to extend rights under UK registration to Dominica with effect from the date of registration in the UK.
The registration term for trademarks based on local applications is 14 years and renewable for similar periods. The term for trademarks registered as UK extensions will mirror that of the UK registration.
