Jordan Establishes Intellectual Property Rights Protection Section

20-Feb-2008

AMMAN - Expressing Jordan's firm commitment to the effective enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), a specialized section to protect Intellectual Property and curb piracy and counterfeiting, under the name “IPRs Protection Section,” has recently been established at the Public Security Directorate.

In a statement to the Jordanian Daily ‘Al-Rai’, Head of the IPRs Protection Section, Mohammad Yasin Al-Rawashdeh, said, “This section, which falls under the umbrella of the Criminal Investigation Department, is the first of its kind in the region that will crack down on IPRs infringements and strengthen law enforcement.”

As part of its role, the section will investigate reports and/or complaints regarding any infringements or violations related to trademarks, trade names and patents and thereafter refer them to the relevant judicial authorities, in order to deal with such infringing cases and take an action.

Al-Rawashdeh added that all IPRs complaints will be investigated based on the provisions of the Public Security Law, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Intellectual Property laws applicable in Jordan.

Seeking to control the distribution and use of counterfeit and pirated products, the Section will be regularly conducting a series of raids in the Jordanian market where all fake products will be seized.

The Section, which started its operations last month, will also strengthen cooperation with all relevant public and private entities involved with the protection and enforcement of IPRs in Jordan, including Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology, Jordan Food and Drug Administration, National Library and the Industrial Property Protection Directorate/Jordan Ministry of Trade and Industry.
