Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) received a document signed by the Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq, Paul Bremer. The document contains the text of an amendment to the Iraqi Trademarks and Descriptions Law No. 21 of 1957.
The new name of the amended law is “Trademark and Geographical Indications Law”. It comes under the laws and usages of war, and is consistent with relevant United Nations (UN) Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 1483 and 1511 (2003), the document explained.
The new amended law acknowledges the Governing Council's desire to bring about significant change to the Iraqi intellectual property system as necessary to improve the economic condition of the people of Iraq.
In addition, the amended law aims to improve the conditions of life, technical skills, and opportunities for all Iraqis and to fight unemployment with its associated deleterious effect on public security.
The aforesaid law entered into force April 26, 2004.
