AMMAN - The ninth edition of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks under the Nice Agreement entered into force as of January 1, 2007.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the major changes involve Classes 14, 20, 21, 26, 34, 42 and 45 but minor changes and additions have also been made to other classes.
The eighth edition of the Nice Classification shall still apply to all applications filed before January 1, 2007. Applications filed on or after that date shall be filed in accordance with the ninth edition of the classification. There will be no reclassification of goods and services for existing applications filed prior to January 1, 2007.
Among the countries that adopted the ninth edition as of the aforementioned date are Australia, China, Turkey, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
