AMMAN - Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) Executive Director Charles Sha'ban was elected to the two newly formed working groups on the Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) established recently by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) and the country-code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The ccNSO IDN working group will consider what the ccNSO should do on IDN issues, what policy issues should be considered such as the languages to be used in each country and whether it should be a formal language of that country besides liaising with the GNSO and preparing a report on the current status and future steps for the ccNSO on IDN issues.
The purpose of the GNSO IDN working group is to identify and specify any policy issues developed for new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) that use the IDN standard.
According to Sha'ban, the working groups are expected to complete their work by the end of the ICANN's meeting in Portugal March 26-30, 2007 and provide a report to the GNSO Council.
Final nominations for both working groups' representatives and chairs will be finalized during the ICAAN Annual Meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, December 2-8, 2006.
