WASHINGTON, DC - The United States Senate ratified on August 3, 2006 a treaty under which the US will join more than 40 other countries, mainly from Europe, in fighting crimes committed via the Internet, according to combined news agencies.
The Council of Europe's Convention on Cybercrime is the first international treaty seeking to address Internet crimes by harmonizing national laws, improving investigative techniques and increasing cooperation among nations.
The Convention promotes a unified approach among nations to ratify similar laws against hacking, computer-facilitated fraud, child pornography, copyright infringement and other crimes committed through digital means. It removes or minimizes legal obstacles that currently impede US investigations and prosecutions of computer-related crimes overseas.
