Saudi Arabia Enacts Geographical Indications Protection Law
30-Nov-2025 RIYADH - The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has recently approved a new legal framework aimed at protecting the names and reputations of products tied to specific regions. The Geographical Indications Protection Law, a royal decree, will come into force 180 days after its publication in the Official Gazette. During this time, the Board of Directors of the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) will draft and issue executive regulations necessary for the implementation of the law.
This move strengthens the protection of traditional and region-specific goods, including agricultural produce, foodstuffs, and artisanal and cultural products. The law prohibits unauthorized use, imitation, or exploitation of geographical indications that may mislead consumers about a product's true origin, and introduces criminal and financial penalties for violations. This ensures that producers can maintain the integrity and value of their regional specialties.
