Iraq’s General Customs Authority Launches New Procedures to Boost Trade Efficiency and Protect Domestic Industry

09-May-2025

BAGHDAD – Iraq’s General Customs Authority (GCA) has announced the introduction of new customs procedures designed to enhance trade efficiency, combat smuggling, and support the growth of domestic industries. This move reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing trade practices and ensuring a fair and transparent market environment.

The new procedures include the implementation of advanced electronic systems aimed at reducing delays and streamlining customs processes. By adopting modern technology, the GCA seeks to facilitate smoother import and export operations, benefiting both businesses and consumers. Furthermore, the authority has strengthened anti-smuggling measures to safeguard the market from low-quality and illegal goods, which pose risks to the economy and public health.

Economic and trade experts have praised the reforms, noting that increased transparency will curb corruption and boost state revenues. The additional funds are expected to support vital development projects and enhance public services across Iraq. Moreover, the new regulations aim to ensure fair trade compliance among all importers, leveling the playing field and fostering a healthier business environment.

The GCA’s commitment to regulating imports is also intended to encourage local production, thereby strengthening Iraq’s domestic industries and reducing reliance on foreign goods. This strategy aligns with broader national efforts to promote economic diversification and self-sufficiency.
