Bulgaria

summary

The trademark registration procedure in Bulgaria is semi-oppositional, i.e. approximately two months after filing the trademark application it is published in the Official Gazette of the Bulgarian Patent Office for opposition.

Any third party can file oppositions against the application within a term of 2 months. After that, the Bulgarian Patent Office conducts substantial examination (within 1 year) and then, in addition to substantial examination, takes into account or disregards the filed oppositions (in case there are any).

From April 27, 2007, there is an option for filing a request for accelerated examination of trademark applications. If such request is filed upon filing the application, the whole registration procedure should take about 1 year at the maximum.

Please note that it is possible to file multi-class trademark applications in Bulgaria.

The term of protection of a trademark in Bulgaria lasts for 10 years. After that, the term of protection can be extended for further periods of 10 years each.
