Morocco and WIPO Sign Agreement to Strengthen Intellectual Property and Protect Cultural Heritage

GENEVA - Morocco has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to enhance cooperation in intellectual property rights, focusing on copyright, neighboring rights, and the legal protection of cultural heritage. This agreement marks a significant step in supporting Morocco’s national IP strategy and safeguarding its rich cultural identity.

The MoU, signed in Geneva, will provide Morocco with access to WIPO’s technical expertise, emerging legal tools, and international digital platforms such as WIPOCONNECT, aimed at improving copyright administration and rights management. A key feature of the partnership is the promotion and protection of the “Label Maroc,” a cultural label designed to formally recognize and protect Morocco’s intangible heritage. Through the Moroccan Industrial and Commercial Property Office (OMPIC), this initiative preserves emblematic cultural elements like the caftan and zellige, which are integral to Morocco’s national heritage.

In addition to heritage protection, the agreement aims to build the capacity of Morocco’s Copyright Office through expert missions and knowledge exchange programs. These joint initiatives will focus on reinforcing the country’s copyright system and ensuring fair compensation for creators. While UNESCO offers symbolic recognition of cultural heritage, WIPO provides the legal framework necessary for Morocco to assert control and pursue legal action against unauthorized commercial use or misrepresentation of its cultural assets.

This partnership reflects Morocco’s broader efforts to integrate intellectual property rights into its cultural and economic development strategy. By combining legal protection with cultural preservation, Morocco is advancing its national identity and supporting the growth of sustainable cultural industries.
