Internet Experts Discuss Regional Issues in Qatar

DOHA - Internet experts, regulators and government representatives from across the Middle East have discussed developments that affect the internet community in a regional meeting of RIPE NCC in Doha, January 17-18, 2006, The Khaleej Times reported.

The RIPE (Reseaux IP Europeens) NCC (Network Co-ordination Centre) is an independent, non-profit membership organization that supports the infrastructure of the Internet through technical co-ordination in its service region.
The most prominent activity of the RIPE NCC is to act as the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) providing global Internet resources and related services (IPv4, IPv6, AS) to members in the service region.

The meeting was hosted by ictQatar, (Qatar’s Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology) and sponsored by Qatar Telecom (Qtel), in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and Qatar Foundation.
In addition to providing a clear overview of the policy development process and management of IP address space in the region, the meeting covered a range of IP networking topics.

Particular focus was made on key issues emerging from the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) as well as on recent developments in Internet security and routing.

The RIPE NCC also provided training seminars on Routing Registry and DNS Security (DNSSEC).
