Registration of Geographical Indications is Now Possible in Egypt

CAIRO – The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade of Egypt announced that it has started the registration of geographical indications for the first time in the country.

This decision comes to maximize the value of Egyptian products, whether agricultural or handicraft, and increase opportunities for exporting them abroad while ensuring the protection of their geographical origin.

The Ministry affirmed that this is the first time that Egyptian products will have specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

As first stage, the Ministry started registering the geographical indications for some commodities; and the registration will cover a wide range of Egyptian products afterwards.
