Director of Turkish Patent Institute Highlights Significance of IPRs Protection

01-Dec-2010

ANKARA - Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN, director of Turkish Patent Institute (TPI), answered the questions of Sezer KILIC in the Masa – Ekonomi (Table – Economy) show broadcasted on TRT Turkish State Television on November 19, 2010, according to TPI.

Prof. Dr. Habip ASAN highlighted Turkish Patent Institute’s activities, trademarks, patents, industrial designs and geographical indications issues which are the elements of industrial property.

Prof. ASAN stated that the protection of innovations is as important and necessary as the innovations itself, and invited people and organizations, who have ideas, trademarks or designs which are included within the scope of industrial property, to protect their rights through registration before TPI.

He commented that Turkish Patent Institute makes effort to provide the most suitable conditions for application and registration, and that the Institute provides services in compliance with the world standards and even higher standards both in application terms and application criteria, pointing out that a significant amount of financial loss is suffered due to R&D studies and patent applications performed without conducting a patent search before.

ASAN, who stated that Turkey has witnessed a great progress in the field of industrial property in the recent years, also added that this success is based on the high economical performance despite of the recent economic crisis, and the increased awareness of institutions regarding industrial property in Turkey.

In 2008, more than 10.000 patent and utility model applications were submitted to Turkish Patent Institute, which is the highest number ever in the history of the Republic. These figures were approximately the same in 2009 despite of the global economic crisis. In the last few years, Turkey has become one of the three countries in Europe where the number of trademark and industrial design applications is the highest.
