AGIP Participates in ICANN Mexico Meeting

MEXICO CITY – The Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP), represented by AGIP Renewals Executive Director Mr. Mahmoud Lattouf, took part in the 34th international public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Mexico City, March 1-6, 2009

This event which is the first of three held annually to conduct policy development and outreach, was hosted by ICANN, the Mexican Internet Association (AMIPCI), the Network Information Center (NIC) Mexico, and the Internet Society (ISOC) Mexico.

The meeting was inaugurated by Vice Minister of Communications of Mexico, Gariela Hernandez, who spoke about the positive impact that information technologies have on productivity, competitiveness, and the living conditions of ordinary people.

About 1219 people attended from over 100 different countries where they got engaged in a wide range of discussions about the Internet’s domain name system and related issues.
Various meetings, workshops, public forums and informal discussions were held over seven days by the different stakeholders of the ICANN model:

• Business interests
• Civil society - including the At-Large Summit of individual Internet user representatives
• Governments and government agencies
• Internet service providers
• Registrants
• Registrars
• Registries
• The technical community

In addition, several key issues and themes were tackled over the course of the meeting such as; new gTLDs, IDNs and IDN Fast Track, RAA Amendments, Improving Institutional Confidence (IIC), At-Large Summit, GNSO Improvements.

ICANN’s next international public meeting will take place in Sydney, Australia, beginning June 21, 2009.

On the other hand, Mr. Lattouf also attended the At-Large Summit coinciding with the ICANN meeting where attendees discussed and submitted comments and feedback to ICANN relating to the introduction of new gTLDs.

In addition, he took part in the Asia Pacific Regional At-Large Organization (APRALO) meetings, where Mr. Karaitiana Taiuru was elected as chair of the Organization for 2009-2011; meanwhile, Ms. Les Allinson (2009-2010) and Mr. Mahmoud Lattouf (2009-2011) were elected vice-chairs of APRALO.

ISOC Hong Kong was re-appointed as the Secretariat of APRALO for 2009-2011.
