New Requirements for Filing Trademark and Industrial Design Applications in Syria

DAMASCUS - Following the issuance of the implementing regulations of Law No. 8 on the protection of Trademarks, Geographical Indications, and Industrial Drawings and Designs in Syria, Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) would like to draw its clients’ kind attention that the new requirements for filing trademark and industrial design applications in Syria are as follows:

Trademark Applications:

1. A copy of the trademark home or any other foreign corresponding registration certificate reflecting the same class of goods and services to be specified in the Syrian application. (The Registrar could request a certified copy thereof at a later stage).
2. A notarized Power of Attorney.
3. Prints (15 pcs) and (1) printing block which can be processed locally.

Required Information:

1. The applicant's name, address, nationality and legal form.
2. The applicant's activities (trading and/or manufacturing).
3. Description of the trade/service mark and its meaning.
4. If the applicant has used or intends to use the trademark in Syria within (3) years from its registration date in Syria.
5. Classes and goods/services.
6. The priority details of the convention application to be claimed, if any. The priority document should be filed within (6) months from the filing date in Syria.
7. In case of a collective trademark, a copy of the utility articles of association.
8. In case of a certification mark, a copy of the permission to use this mark according to the accredited quality and inspection.

Industrial Design Applications: 
1. A notarized Power of Attorney.
2. A copy of the design home or foreign registration.
3. Six photographs of each design in all dimensions. (The Registrar may request a physical sample of the design later).
4. Technical description of each design with the supporting drawing.
