NEW DELHI - India’s Union Cabinet approved on February 8, 2007, the country’s accession to the 1989 Madrid Protocol Concerning the International Registration of Marks administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Announcing the decision, Indian Finance Minister P. Chidambaram stated that the government would amend the 1999 Trademarks Act to enable India's accession to the Protocol.
Accession to the Madrid Protocol will provide better and extensive protection to Indian mark owners abroad and ease the filing of applications by foreign mark owners in India.
